500 _aABSTRACT : This paper articulates some of the continuing issues in the teaching and learning of mathematics. It tries to integrate the school of psychology into the school of mathematics as a unified school of thought, thereby creating an environment conductive to teaching and learning. the theoretical underpinnings of the school of cognitive psychology and their predominating influences across disciplines serve as the framework of the discussion. The article also explores some of the innovative paradigms in the teaching and learning of mathematics, but specifically concentrates on the mechanics of a constructivism approach as an essential medium in creating a realstic-experiential classroom environment.
